Feminist art and digital media workshops are an integral part of the Women’s Well Being Initiative (WWBI) by the Women’s and Gender Studies program at USC. They are designed to engage adolescent girls from a local juvenile arbitration program for first-time non-violent offenders in the dialogue about gender and social justice through self-reflexive, issues-based art and digital media making. The majority of our participants come from rural communities and experience poverty, abusive interpersonal relationships, and family trauma. During the four 3-hour sessions, girls are invited to unpack difficult feelings, events, socioeconomic conditions, and media representations that permeate their daily lives, and respond to these obstacles by creating artwork. They work with various expressive media such as poetry, mixed media collage, sculpture, and video making.
