Spring 2010

During the workshop Jamming the Labels, a group of six girls designed hand-made collage logos and printed them onto T-shirts. With these images, they challenged a "bad girl" label and talked back to the images of women in popular culture and their own emotions of anger and rage. Special thanks to a graduate student volunteer Katie Chandler and filmmaker Rebecca Boyd for their help with this project.

Summer 2010

This new media workshop entitled Speak Up, Girl! was conducted with a group of ten girls. It focused on critical and self-reflexive video production based on the issues that emerged in our initial discussions such as drug use, peer pressure, and body image. It invited girl participants to write and videotape themselves reading the poems about their lives and make short infomercials on the issue of their choice in small groups. I am indebted to an independent filmmaker Rebecca Boyd who helped with this video project.
